Einige Gedanken zum Komponisten PMH Some thoughts on the
composer PMH
von Terry Riley by Terry Riley
I was invited,
during the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich to play, and my concert
took place on the fateful day, when several Israeli athletes
were tragically shot down. We arrived a few days earlier to
Munich in the accompaniment of La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela,
my wife Ann and Pandit Pran Nath.
Wolken. My first sight of Peter left me in constant
reminder, it was a sunny day with blue skies and thick white
clouds.
We walked on the
grounds of the Olympic Games along and came to a place where
musicians played outdoors, it was on the so-called "road game".
One of the musicians caught my
attention because he wore a colorful headband and looked as he
was one of the Be-In's of the 1960s, where hippies, artists and
poets to outdoor festivals brought to the lives and life-On-His
to celebrate.
redeten miteinander. The next day the boy appeared with
the headband, to give us a visit to be reimbursed and we invited
him to a chai and talked with each other.
This person, who as Peter Michael Hamel
out, surprised me, because he very well informed about my work
and the work of La Monte Young and Pandit Pran Nath said, and at
a time when our work has not been so widespread.
At that moment began a
friendship over the years has been repeatedly renewed.
Gemeinsames. Whenever I was in Germany, which in former
years, quite often happens, I was able to contact Peter, and we
compared the musical developments, and found much in common.
We both shared a love for Indian classical music, and recognized
their significance for world culture intermingle.
We
saw that their significant tradition may be needed for future
development of music in the West.
The cultured elements of melody, rhythm and
intonation, which over the centuries on the Indian sub-continent
were for us who were attracted by this great emotional force, is
now available for learning.
herausstellte. Peter had gone to India and had the
vocalists Pandit Patekar taken with the vocal traditions he had
studied and I had 1970 something started, which was a
26-year-long intensive study with my guru Pandit Pran Nath
emerged.
Because at that time so few
colleagues in the Indian Classical music was involved, was my
connection to Peter is an important significance.
in Vrindavan studierte.
erheblich. When I heard of Walter Auer Bach was invited
to Metamusik Festival 1974 in Berlin with my keyboard music to
open, I met again with Peter and his friend Peter Pannke, who
also had the Indian connection and Dhrupad singing in Vrindavan
studied. The Metamusik Festival in West Berlin was the best of
my knowledge one of the first, if not the first large,
internationally perceived world music festival and the energy
exchange among the participating musicians from all over the
world and connect with the audience were electrified
considerably.
When I in 1975 in Mary
Bauermeister home near Cologne lived for a recording with Don
Cherry prepare the Peter had taught, I met Pandit Patekar,
Peters teachers, and I had the pleasure to work with Peter and
Pandit for the singing of the morning Raga to sit.
Sometimes Karlheinz Stockhausen (husband of Mary) to visit and a
lively discussion about the different views and different
qualities of our work took place.
Peter's heart at that time seemed to
be incompatible with the post-Weberian traditions that are so
dominant, developed in Germany, want to unite.
His attention was
much more attracted by the American minimalism and the ethnic
music of other cultures and to a certain extent also by rock and
jazz, and from what later became New Age out.
Musik in Deutschland. In this sense, he stood in the
distance to the field of modern music in Germany.
festzuhalten. He had the enormous importance of
improvisation and recognized the importance of "the moment" -
being a performance. He understood the importance of the
experimental and the need for a new way to find his ideas to be
recorded.
Even a glance at his scores shows that!
Tanpura spielte. He then integrated elements of modal
ragas in his compositions, and went out to even be able to so
far that he in one of his pieces appeared as a vocalist, while
the accompaniment of an orchestra and even the Indian tanpura
played.
Nevertheless, his music at the same time and over the years more
and more rooted in the tradition of great German and he is now
recognized as one of the most important persons whose
compositions the development of the repertoire of the 20th and
21st century have enriched great.
Einbildungskraft wacht. Peters personality filled with
warmth and his voice has a honey-loving note that a person with
a huge heart, reveals the determination of his thoughts and his
imagination monitored.
His book "Through music for self", since 1978 in English
translation, is one of the most important works on the nature of
sound and has its roots in the old traditions.
This book had an enormous influence on the thinking of many
musicians and thinkers, for the first time with a treasure of
ideas were confronted, which is revealed here. This font also
deepened some of the experiences that I made on my way to the
Indian classical music , especially in connection to the
mystical and sacred traditions, at the roots of the classical
music of India depends.
Peter and I were together for
the first time publicly 1982 in Amerika Haus in Munich.
mich We improvised on two pianos in a mode to which I
als den indischen Raga Bilaval erinnere. as the Indian
raga Bilaval recall.
Peter had previously prepared
with a little piano playing, the black keys of his piano and had
prepared the white keys unchanged.
erinnernswerte Nacht, That gave him the option of the
piano twice using two different-sounding instruments. It was a
memorable night,
von welcher einiges live aufgenommen wurde. some of which
was recorded live.
ENCOUNTER in Bombay. 1983, Peter actively looking at a
big Indian festival invited Congress to get to the EAST WEST
MUSIC ENCOUNTER in Bombay.

diverse cultural backgrounds to come together and their music to
play for each other to create a sense of responsibility to

Indiens. The discussions were lively and sometimes
