Song for Gamble

Gamble Rogers has been described by journalists coast-to-coast as:

"An American treasure ... an awesome talent ... one-hundred percent enjoyable ... a rare and guaranteed treat ... worthy of inclusion in the Smithsonian."
High praise for a man who referred to himself simply as a modern-day troubadour and folk singer. "I have been incredibly fortunate in being able to make my living doing what I love -- entertaining," the native Floridian once said.
To those who knew him he was the consummate gentleman. As Sam Pacetti once said, "he was the most centered person I ever knew." It was a shock, ... but perhaps no surprise, when in 1991 the story broke that Gamble had lost his own life while trying to save a drowning man. Most who had played, laughed, and smiled with him would tell you that he was just that kind of man. He would jump in to save you.
Gamble may be gone but his spirit and wisdom live on in his music and in his stories. It lives on in the memories of those who knew him, those who write and sing about him, and it lives on the the school named for him and the annual music celebration in his memory, "The Gamble Rogers Folk Festival."
On this special addition of the Caravan we hope you will enjoy a classic live moment with Gamble, recorded live at the Garden Theatre in Charleston South Carolina in 1988 by Radio Station WSCI. It is preserved in an album called "Oklawaha County Laissez-Faire," which captures so many of his talents, from musical virtuosity, superb story telling, and a tremendous sense of humor through it all. As the "Song For Gamble" tells it, .... "He keeps you laughing at the back door, .... crying out for more." We'll open with a few memories of Gamble and a song written by Steve Gillette that captures in a few short lines a clear image of the man. Dale Crider, joined by Barbara Johnson and Liz Williamson will perform.
