Musicians in their Own Words - Keepers of the Groove
     In Keepers of the Groove you'll discover exciting connections between the rhythmic languages of Brazilian samba, North Indian Tabla music, Latin Jazz and beyond. "Keepers of the Groove" features vivid stories from master percussionists Poncho Sanchez, Cyro Baptista, Cindy Blackman, Suphala and Bill Summers. "Keepers of the Groove" finds intimate connections between the rhythmic languages of Brazilian Samba, North Indian tabla and Latin jazz. The climax of the hour arrives with a sound-rich visit to a percussion garage and a suspenseful tale of accompanying soprano Kathleen Battle — with a vacuum-cleaner hose.
     The creative lives of a wide variety of celebrated musicians take center stage in "Musicians in Their Own Words" an absorbing new special from Public Radio Internatiuonal and the "Musicians in Their Own Words" Project.
       Hosted by Bonnie Grice, each hour-long program features first-person portraits that go deep inside the creative life. The impressive guest roster for the CPB-supported series includes lyric soprano Renée Fleming, Latin jazz bandleader Poncho Sanchez, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, mezzo soprano Cecilia Bartoli, bluegrass singer Abigail Washburn, gospel legend Clarence Fountain and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. It is produced by David Schulman.
