WUFT-FM, Classic 89, is a 100,000 watt public radio station serving 16 counties in North Central Florida. Signing on in September of 1981, WUFT quickly garnered a reputation as one of the top public radio stations in the country. Broadcasting on 89.1 in stereo from studios located in the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, Classic 89 presents a distinctive blend of sounds: classical, jazz, folk, and world music; national, state, and local news; and special musical performances and public affairs programs. It also serves as a training site for University of Florida telecommunications students to polish their craft. In November of 1995, in an effort to bring public radio to areas not reached by existing stations, WJUF-FM signed on. WJUF is a 20,000 watt repeater station located in Citrus County, which retransmits the WUFT signal to residents of the Florida Nature Coast area. Since the frequency differs from the parent station (90.1), it is known to residents of Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties as Nature Coast 90. Over the years, Classic 89 and Nature Coast 90 have become a vital part of the communities we serve--both by the programming enjoyed by listeners, and by hosting special events throughout the region. For example, every summer Classic 89--in partnership with sister station WUFT-TV and the City of Gainesville--sponsors the Gainesville Independence Day celebration Fanfares and Fireworks. And our annual fundraiser--A Celebration of Wine --has grown to be a major community gathering. Both stations are an intregal part of the culture of North Central Florida, serving communities with quality programming for almost two decades. OUR MISSION STATEMENT: WUFT-TV/FM and WJUF-FM are a part of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism & Communications and are vital resources providing telecommunications programs and services accessible to all and enhancing the quality of life of the residents of North Central Florida. WUFT-TV/FM and WJUF-FM distribute these programs and services on a state, regional and national level. WUFT-TV-FM and WJUF-FM, through it’s facilities and staff, also provide an opportunity for training of students in the University of Florida’s College of Journalism & Communications.
