About the Radio Reading Service

The  Radio Reading Service began broadcasting in Gainesville, Florida in June 1992 through the cooperative efforts of WUFT-FM, the Division of Blind Services, other agencies and individuals.   We currently are serving more than 450 clients throughout the North Central Florida area. The Radio Reading Service is a closed circuit reading service broadcasting 24 hours daily to blind and visually impaired listeners.  Through the sub-carrier channel (SCA) of public radio station WUFT-FM, hundreds of listeners receive Radio Reading Service broadcasts and Minnesota Radio Talking Book broadcast via special radio receivers.  Receivers are available on loan without charge to those who are eligible and who want to keep up to date with the latest words in newspapers, magazines, and best-sellers. The Reading Service is not available to the general public, and the signal cannot be picked up on conventional radios.

Programming originates from studios at the University of Florida.  The Radio Reading Service relies on the dedication of volunteers who donate their time and talent to provide programming to hundreds of blind and visually impaired listeners.

The newspapers and magazines we read on a regular basis include:

Broadcast operations are sustained by an annual grant from the Florida Department of Education.  Receivers are most often funded by group and individual donations, and annual listener contributions.
