Experiencing
Choral Reading
by Mary Ann Paulin, 2001 Bechtel Fellowship Award Winner
3:30-4:30 p.m.
UF Library East,
1st Floor Conference Room
Sponsored by
The Department of Special Collections, George A. Smathers Libraries
and The Center for the Study of Children's Literature and Media
Mary Ann's speciality
is choral reading of poetry and how it can enhance a student's experience
of language and poetry. She has been a school library media
specialist for many years, and has given presentations around the
world on her idea that choral reading improves vocabulary, builds
a repertoire of poetry, and improves listening skills. She
has been chair of the Newbery Award committee and has written three
books, including Creative Uses of Children's Literature, More Creative
Uses of Children's Literature, and Outstanding Books for the College
Bound, which help teachers and librarians introduce books to students
in a variety of creative ways. While at the Baldwin Library, she
read a wide range of children's poetry dating from 1800, searching
for poems which could be adapted for choral reading. The program
will include audience participation.
